Bikur Cholim - The Great Neck Bikur Cholim program centers on Shabbos / Yom Tov Housing and visits to patients at LIJ – Long Island Jewish & North Shore Community Hospital. Both hospitals have chaplains on staff and each hospital offers glatt kosher foord to patients that request it. At LIJ, we have an apartment at Glen Oaks that houses up to four people, with-in the eruv and in walking distance to the hospital and the Young Israel of New Hyde Park. At North Shore, there is housing in small rooms on the hospital campus for relatives of patients. Both hospitals offer a Bikur Cholim lounge and the limited housing is given out each shabbos on a first come – first serve basis. We pride ourselves on helping in any capacity that we can – and all inquiries are confidential! For further information, questions, reservations, etc, please contact Michael Katz on his cell: 516 510 7811 or email him at: mjkatz@earthlink.net
Meals for Families with New Babies - The Young Israel of Great Neck has a committee of families who cook or order dinners for families with new babies for the first few weeks after the baby's birth. Tomchei Shabbos is an organization that distributes boxes of groceries to the elderly, handicapped, needy and poor in the Queens area. For several years, a group of families from our shul have maintained a route in Forest Hills. Every Wednesday, one of our families takes a turn at picking up the groceries in Kew Gardens and delivering it to assigned apartment buildings in Forest Hills. It requires about an hour and you need at least 2 people, one to sit in your double parked car, the other to take the groceries upstairs.
Suffice it to say, that while we are doing a very important mitzvah, the bonding that we have with our children (who come along to help) and the nachas of knowing you are helping someone in need – with your “actions” rather than just making a monetary donation – is a very special experience. We are always looking for families to commit and take on this important mitzvah. It requires your vehicle, your time (one early evening every 5 or 6 weeks) and the reward is indescribable.
